Double chin or also known as “double chin fat” occurs as a result of fat accumulation under the chin. Although it is usually associated with excess weight, this condition can also be seen in thin people.
Double chin is a very common aesthetic problem among both women and men. The fat accumulated under the chin becomes prominent when the head is tilted downwards, causing the appearance of an extra chin.
A double chin can create an aesthetically unpleasant appearance and this can negatively affect the person’s self-confidence and social life.
There are many different reasons for a double chin, including dietary habits, age, genetic factors and poor posture. When you eat more calories than you expend, this fat can accumulate under the chin as well as in other parts of the body.
With aging, collagen and elastin levels in the skin decrease and the skin loses its firmness, which can cause sagging and fat accumulation under the chin. Posture disorders, especially the “tech neck” syndrome, which develops as a result of tilting our heads forward while constantly looking at phone or computer screens, can also predispose to double chin.
However, in many people, genetic factors are influential. Fat distribution is genetically determined and therefore people with a genetic predisposition to fat under the chin may find it more difficult to reduce fat in this area with diet and exercise.
